In Dream Theater's early days, they called the band "Majesty", and made a demo, "The Majesty Demos" (click for info) when most of the band members were just 19 years old. This demo got the attention of Jim Matheos of Fates Warning, which is what got the band noticed in the progressive metal scene. Due to some legal issues with the band name "Majesty", they came up with the name Dream Theater. Even though they had legal issues with the original band name, they still use the Majesty Symbol as part of their logo.

Dream Theater is very well known for it's technical musicianship. Their sound was unique for their time period. It is a melding of Progressive rock, Metal riffage, distortion, and mixed into fantastic harmonies.

My first exposure to this band was the album Black Clouds and Silver Linings. Since then, I have collected almost the entire discography.

Very good band. I really enjoyed their self-titled album. I got into them not too long after my black metal phase ended.

I swear, the synthesizer section right before the solo in this song drove me nuts when I first started listening to them, and then the solo won me over again. Ha ha.

I love the groovy solo here. So awesome!

It looks like we will see a new album in 2019....

DREAM THEATER vocalist James LaBrie stated about the new material, "There's a heaviness to it, there's an aggression to it," while guitarist John Petrucci added: "So far the music is heavy, it's progressive, it's melodic, it's shredding, and it's also epic. So it has all those elements, which… they are the five pillars of DREAM THEATER, if you wanna call it that."

I've been listening to a LOT of DT over the past few months. I was never a huge fan. Didn't dislike them, but never considered myself anything more than a casual listener and only every so often.

In the last couple of months, I've been listening to a couple of their live albums, a LOT!

Once in a Livetime / -and - / Live Scenes from New York

Both of these albums are amazing. This is something I've said to a few people. It's one thing to make an amazing and technical proficient album in the studio. You can over produce the ever lovin' hell out of an album with a bazillion splices to make things sound "perfect". But the fact that these guys can sit there and put on a 3+ hour show and sound that good live? That's beyond amazing.

I don't even know some of the songs they played on these before I started listening, but I have to say that once I put one of these albums on, I let it ride all the way through.

To experience the true passion and mind blowing precision, you have to hear them live. I have never seen them live, but I always search for their live videos on YT. I love this band!!!

You will have to let me know what you think. After you listen to the studio Stuff, try a couple live albums like Live at Budakon & Live at the Marquee…...they are AMAZING! At one time in the past, I use to listen to DT quite a lot.
